Hypochristian, yes he is.

Much though I consider this guy a scumbag because of his opposition to women’s bodily autonomy, I can’t condemn him for merely being gay, which is all the “sex scandal” is. We’ve had so many priests who molested children, and so many bigwigs in the church hierarchy who covered up their crimes (essentially conspiring with them). This guy is just gay. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Unrelatedly, I can’t be the only person who, on first scanning the article, thought that “The Pillar” was a gay porn or hookup site.

Once again, it is always projection. Always and forever.

It’s not that he’s gay that’s the problem; it’s his hypocrisy.

It’s about him breaking his vow of celibacy, not about with whom he broke it.

Say someone believed the sugar they put in your drink was actually rat poison. It wasn’t, it was sugar, but the act remains a horrifying thing, right? If someone truly believed a gun was loaded and pulled the trigger to shoot you, you’d be glad there was no bullet, but your feelings toward them wouldn’t differ much, I’d think.

I don’t believe in his religious garbage about homosexuality, it’s imaginary bullshit, but he does. That goes beyond hypocritical, to me. That’s someone who is willing to do things they believe to be evil and damn people to hell eternally to satisfy himself. When you look at what he believes he is doing, it’s really frightening.

The church keeps pointing out “IT WANS’T WITH CHILDREN!”, because at this point, when you say “Priest Sex Scandal”, 99.99998% of the time, IT WAS WITH CHILDREN. But, by all means, let this creep dictate who and who should not get communion. (hur… hur… I said dictate. hur… hur…)

It always seems to be that the religious folks who judge the harshest always wind up having something to hide.

Always this

There aren’t any good guys in this story. The Pillar is a right-wing Catholic publication, and the article insinuates that Burrill’s homosexuality is also evidence that he’s a paedophile. They’re basically turning the RCC’s own bigoted policies against their own (even this conservative priest who’d deny a fellow Catholic from receiving communion because he takes pro-choice political positions). Burrill himself is a hypocrite and kapo, of course, the kind of closeted gay man who made life miserable for other LGBTQ+ people.

And then there’s the way the outlet dug this information up, using data sold by carriers and ISPs to third-party brokers to piece together the fact that the person in question was Burrill. So much for “anonymised user data”.

All this. Awful group of people uses data bought from awful companies to attack other awful person for the wrong reasons.

… which are propounded as doctrine by awful powerful religious institution.

yes the story in WAPO about Burrill threw some shade at The Pillar, whose members i guess do not live in glass houses either.

Out of curiosity, do these bishops who want to deny communion to politicians who support the right to an abortion also want to deny it to politicians who support the death penalty?

Oh no, hypocrisy has never been a problem for the Catholic church. Being gay, on the other hand…

Three guesses and the first two don’t count.

Not only for the legislators, but for executives who in many cases literally have the unilateral power to commute a death sentence but choose not to.

Right? Or, (and personally, I think people should be able to do whatever they want in this regard) the whole Catholic notion of contraception being “against nature” but then you never hear of them condemning fertility treatments, IVF, and such. But I guess expecting religion to follow any kind of logic is a recipe for frustration. :woman_shrugging:t2:

I grew up going to Catholic schools, and I guarantee you that they’re pretty condemnatory about IVF. They make it clear that it’s against the rules for Catholics and Catholic hospitals won’t do it. The basic logic is that there should be fucking only if it can result in babies, and babies should only result from fucking. (They call fucking “the marriage act”).
