Sadly, and as evinced by the poll we’re discussing, there is no dual meaning in the phrase for a lot of people. For them, it’s just an earnest and straightforward expression that usually goes something like: “say what you will about Mussolini, but at least he made the trains run on time.” These are not nuanced thinkers with an awareness of actual history.
Meanwhile, those of us who actually studied the period know that during the desperate stages of the war against Russia post-Stalingrad, the Nazis were shunting eastward-bound troop and munition trains to sidings in order to give priority to trains terminating at the concentration camps.
This seriously reads like a “Do you walk to school or take your lunch?” kinda question. Besides, everyone knows that any republicans who gave a shit about democracy fled the party long ago. The ones left value power and the ability to hurt people who disagree with them in any way, or hold differing viewpoints in any way. And not necessarily in that order.
What? What’s wrong with two completely orthogonal answers for a choice? It’s either democracy or economy. Can’t have both functioning at once!!! Totally inconceivable!
If you are in the US, hold your nose and vote Democratic (ie - blue) no matter who.
For the first time for me, ever, I voted straight ticket Democratic. I normally vote 3rd+ parties down-ticket, but not this mid term. This vote is for saving The American Experiment. I didn’t like it, but I did it.
