Hmm! I’ll have to ask Peter Coade to add those units to his forecast - it’s a handy unit to estimate just how jeezly’ cold it’s going to be…
Meh, these scales are created to facilitate whining and little else. “Wind chill” and the “heat index” are ridiculous unscientific scales of how the weather “feels.” You can have temperature with wind or humidity, but those things are all different measurements. Why no mention of the wind chill in August? What’s the heat index in Chicago today?
Hmm, according to the old wind-chill index, winds over 170 mph make you warmer. The new windchill index says that winds over 170 mph only make you warmer if the temperature is over 80 F.
As long as it’s not sub-zero, you should be able to coat the inside of the lenses with cheap shampoo to prevent the fogging. Smear it on, wipe off the excess leaving a thin layer behind. It works on my hockey helmet, at any rate.
Don’t. It’s not just keeping warm: it’s the fact that drivers are even less likely to see you, between snow blindness (sun bouncing off of snow), peripheral vision obscured by hats, scarves, etc., and the fact that their windshields and mirrors are at least partly covered with salt and/or ice. They’re also less able to stop quickly if they do see you, if there’s any ice on the road.
