Since she is being held in a military facility, he could simply order them not to release her. Which would (as near as I can tell) be an illegal order, but he could still give it. Leading to a showdown over the chain of command, the rule of law, and military authoritarianism on day one. Yippee!
Anyway, this is great news. I hope those of us that have been opposed to her treatment in prison will not forget her once she is out.
True. The rider against trans specific care was dropped in 2016 for all Department of Defense insurance coverage. They had the rider a full year after my state required all insurance to cover trans folks. I get my insurance through the DoD via a spouse, and they had to lodge an EEO complaint in 2015 for it, where we were eventually asked if we’d table the complaint because they were dropping it in 2016. We were told we’d probably win anyways, because a handful of transgender ladies had sued and won already.
I also don’t get the prison acting like this is rocket science. She just needs to have a visit with an endocrinologist, and get on hormones, and have access to the therapist she wanted. I wish folks would stop acting like transgender care is crazy complicated. Labs and hormones make up the most important steps in the beginning. We do that for cisgendered folks all the time.
Except i don’t really see what choice he had, any attempt to leave the country and he’s going to be extradited. That statement from mr. earnest is unfettered hot bullshit.
Absolutely fabulous news for chelsea though. She should’ve been pardoned.
Amusingly the one party this is actually not in line is the US who has never filed charges against Assange (though this does make a paranoid pretence for his dodging rape charges).
I think it’s also relevant that the US Gov has been working the diplomatic channel to make sure Snowden isn’t taken in by other nations either. I could find the article about Switzerland for 100% sure; I think also Germany and at least one Scandinavian country, possibly having to do with speaking/testifying before national assemblies rather than asylum.
Cardinal Douthat is freaked out by lady parts under normal circumstances – he finds it unfortunate that one has to engage with them in order to reproduce as the RCC instructs. To have a male choose to have lady parts short-circuits him right into tinfoil mitre territory.
