I would’ve missed it. It’s not award-winning drawing, but I don’t think it’s so ugly to care or notice. It’s just textbook!

China, where being a children’s book illustrator means risking prison.

Just sub par. More like “I’m not going to pay you for this” bad not really “to the gulag with you” bad though

As the linked piece notes, it’s almost certainly because they had zero budget for the illustrations, not necessarily because they were trying to subvert China from within or something.

Some years ago I did a temp job at a children’s book publisher, and the managing editor showed me some of the mail they got from people who thought they were seeing dirty things in the illustrations. So, you know, people will see what they want to see. It doesn’t help here that the pictures really are not good. And the people who are seeing things have the power to have you picked up and sent to jail for no reason.

“cultural annihilation”

So what Russia is doing to Ukraine is somehow in the same category as a few drawings in a kids maths book.

Oooookaaaay.

Especially as netizens are comparing the cartoons to old textbooks with socialist realist illustrations of cheerful children in an idealised Maoist China.

Even the last cartoon movie is too much for China. So imagine a inverted Chinese flag.
