Santa Claus is traditionally red, so are communists. Therefore, according to the newspapers, the mayor of Rio Branco, capital of the state of Acre, northern Brazil, refused to paint Santa Claus’s cabin red. He chose a bold shade of blue, coincidentally the same color as his political party, to decorate the city streets. The population expressed furious criticism, so He stepped back and painted it red. Anti-communism is also strong among his allies, so He painted it blue again. Critics doubled the volume of their discontent with the cromatic fracas. To avoid problems and a possible civil war, City Hall covered the bucolic little house with black tarp.

The various Father Christmas’ of Slovenia
In Bosnia our base was visited by Dyeda Mraz at Christmas. He walked up to the main visitor gate clad head to toe in furs. I was working in the TOC so I got to hear the gate guards calling up the report of his presence. Our company XO insisted that he send up the report in proper SALUTE format. We got to listen as this PFC call up “Size - one jolly man, Activity - preparing to hand out gifts I guess, etc” . A further clarification was made to ensure he did not have 8 tiny reindeer (needed to be sure it wasn’t Santa).
He was allowed on base because he had a valid ID (spoiler - he was really a human who worked in the chow hall). He spent the day walking around embracing confused American soldiers and being treated like royalty by the Russian soldiers.
