Real question: Could it have been really possible for Kelso and Red to modify the circuit to reduce the size of the paddles using a soldering iron?

Yes, it’s theoretically possible. Probably a lot harder if you don’t have the schematic in front of you.

The draw logic for each paddle runs off a 4-bit counter feeding into a NAND. To shorten the paddle, you could tie the NAND inputs together so they go high sooner.
