Kvass: worst Guinness ever.
I imagine it’s a quarter of the number that owe their existence to Boone’s Farm.
Ugh. Not sure if it was Goya (though probably was) but all the malta I’ve ever tried has been sickly sweet. The sugar content seems to be about the same as other soft drinks, but it somehow seems even more wretchedly syrupy than Coke etc. Maybe it’s the malt, which has a distinctive strong flavour, unlike most other sugars.
It’s like drinking unfermented wort… and as far as I can tell, that’s what it is.
At least Zima had alcohol in it.
The first time I bought Kvass I thought I was buying a suspiciously cheap beer. The packaging was all in Cyrillic, but the imagery was rather beer like. It turned me on to a whole world of drinks.
Was she by any chance in college in the early 90’s? That and Boone Farm Strawberry wine were the drinks of choice for undergrads who wanted to drink, but didn’t really enjoy alcohol back when I was an undergrad. (and our town had a microbrewery…)
It was, indeed, Miller Clear Beer. It even reached the UK.
It was launched around the time of the Tab Clear/Pepsi Crystal Debacle. I know this because I was sharing a house at the time with a friend who became briefly obsessed with clear beverages, and we had to put up with a lot of this shit every time he went shopping. IIRC, they were all awful.
“Synthetic Scotch, synthetic commanders.”
Funny bit of trivia. In the science fiction series Babylon 5, there’s a scene with a Zima sign in the 23rd century.
The Zima ad in the background of T.K.O. might seem like an example (of the Unintentional Period Piece Trope), but JMS purposely put it in there as a gag. He said he would be amazed if Zima still existed in the 21st Century, let alone the 23rd. [1]
You can taste the disappointment as the guy says “Zima’s good…”
“It is… It’s… It. It is green.”
You know, I’ve never tasted Zima, and I’m okay with that. But those commercials really bring back the mediocrity of the 90’s.
So I guess they did a great job of not selling me Zima?
Back in '01 I tried “Clear Brew” in Japan.
It was alcoholic, just terrible.
Zima: the second most popular beverage in Zima commercials.™️
