Colorado radio host fired after wishing for a "nice school shooting" to interrupt impeachment coverage

Joking that you’d rather have children killed to spare a corrupt president the embarrassment is a few steps past tasteless. But if it makes you feel any better i will send this gentleman some thoughts and prayers.

No one is being criminally charged. A radio hosts’s job is to say things. Saying the wrong thing is screwing up their work duties. This person was fired for incompetence/negligence in their work.

If it was a factor worker being fired for making the same joke I’d agree we might not want to applaud, but if it were a factor worker being fired for pressing the wrong button and scrapping a day’s worth of output I would say, “Yeah, that’s kind of something you’ll get fired for.” This is more akin to the latter.

I was thinking “I kill children,” from the Dead Kennedys. Which is a slight change from most GOP policies which bring “Kill the Poor,” by DK to mind.

My understanding isn’t that he was trying to “spare a corrupt president the embarrassment” as you say, but that he was sick of covering it. Hence the joke that he’d even take something truly horrifying instead. And to be clear, I don’t give a shit about him as an individual. I don’t even watch listen to that shit. My concern is with the growing trend of pop-culture vindictiveness.

(edit, didn’t notice that it was radio)

This was neither comedy (in that it was extremely unfunny) nor a crime (he was fired, not arrested).

If we allowed “Trump got away with worse” to become our new threshold for acceptable behavior then nobody could ever get fired again.

He’s in the wrong business if he doesn’t want to cover a relevant historic event. I think him being fired was a kindness and he can pursue something more to his liking.

Trumpism is a fucking disease.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to say something, not the freedom from consequences.

This statement causes real harm. As a parent, I can tell you that, if I was a parent of one of the kids killed in the Columbine massacre, which is local to this station, and I heard this “joke” on my drive into work, I would be completely emotionally devastated.

This twerp seems to be working on a comb-over emulating his hero…

Yeah, we all know Trump is held to a lower standard than teenage babysitters, but the solution can’t be to lower the standards for teenage babysitters to those of the President of the United States. They are looking after children!

Yeah, but Colorado is kind of the innovator here.

So much this. A lot of the humor and memes from the right are so self-unaware they often own themselves without even realizing it. Especially with the kind of “lol socialism sucks because…” memes that I look at and think, “hey this looks pretty awesome to me”

The dude’s statement falls into the category of “funny never”. That is not comedy, but someone being a sociopathic jackass.

Just to clarify the timeline here, they were fired within hours (or minutes?) of the incident by their Christian-content, right-wing radio station, likely before anyone outside of the conservative hate bubble got wind of it. The condemnation by the general public came later. So who exactly is your beef with? SJWs and PC folks had nothing to do with this, it reads more like a shrewd business decision.

And on top of that, how many tasteless or offensive things has this host said in the past? Have they been warned before to watch it or they might can them? Does this hosts’ on-air awfulness extend off-air? Are they the source of regular complaints by co-workers? Or maybe it’s just that the owner of the radio station lost a kid in a shooting.

People might feel that the radio station was needlessly reactive in firing someone who called for the massacre of children on air, but that’s just a feeling. It isn’t supported by any facts, I doubt a good Bayesian analysis would put it as a likely scenario.

i cannot even begin to fathom how he thought this would be ok to say in ANY context.

In 2019, there have been more mass shootings than days of the year in the United States. Sorry to say, but school shootings don’t make the national news anymore. It’s routine.

How embarrassing. I hope his home is fire bombed to distract from the constant coverage of Trump’s impeachment/his firing. /s

“Aww c’mon. . . I said a NICE school shooting, so like, water guns or class photos. Because that would really take my mind off the obvious guilt of Donald Trump.”

It certainly deserves a kick in the nuts.
