This isn’t rumor or innuendo. Dude literally fucking said this stuff. Live on air. But I guess he’s being unfairly victimized for something he literally said. But hey, he was just joking, so all is cool right? Damn librul snowflakes!
Recent? Ever heard of Emmette Till? We are clearly trending towards a more equitable and reasonable system of “societal justice”. As with almost every other social phenomenon, this is something which has always occurred, but we didn’t hear about it because we were not as interconnected. I think something new which you may be witnessing, due to that interconnectedness, is that a lot of privileged and powerful folks are finally being made to feel a form of mob justice that was once reserved mostly for the common man…non-whites, the poor and women. Johnny Depp is gonna be just fine. I’d save your concern for people with real problems.
Yes, and that reprimand had two appropriate components:
- Termination of employment
- Public scorn and ridicule
My concern lies solely with our culture’s recent tendency to take penalization for alleged actions into its own hands.
This fellow broadcast a stupid and grossly offensive remark, and failed to apologize. Now he’s been fired (#1) and is being publicly shamed (#2). Your concerns are noted, but I’m sure this fellow will survive.
I find myself getting more and more frustrated when I see some article trigger a demand for punishment that seems completely disproportionate to the circumstance.
The punishment here is completely proportionate to the circumstances that engendered it, and claiming otherwise is just silly.
And in this case “mob justice” was just a bunch of people on the internet saying “I’m glad that jerk got fired.” So not exactly on par with tar-and-feathering or burning at the stake.
