It’s not the best choice, it’s Spacers Choice
In days of yore the scions of wealth and power rose above the masses in towers of stone and steel. As their greed grew so did the towers, upon the ground, up into the skies and within the minds of the self anointed aristocracies. Soon the clouds were not high enough and these pillars of avarice broke away and drifted to become small glittering stars orbiting the now scorched mud ball once called Earth.
fuck them all
Quoth Holmes, “…orbital hotel The Ranos opens as soon as next year, pending just a little more investor support…”
I’m going to bet that the investors and execs are also mad that Campbell’s name was stripped from the awards and con.
He added that the company admits that it’s possible its timeline is pushing it somewhat.
Starting in 5, ready in 7 years? Yeeeaaahhhh…
On a theoretical level, I suppose not. In theory someone could build a space hotel, and even within the timeframe. In theory. (Whether it would be safe is another issue entirely.) But practically, given their current resources, the costs (and relative payoffs), technical hurdles (and extra money required to surmount them in the limited timeframe), time required to do the testing before implementing it, etc? I’m going to say it’s impossible in those respects at least.
The only reason I’m not immediately dismissing the timeline as pure fancy is SpaceX and the relentless reduction in launch costs. If some billionaire gets really excited about this and is willing to push to make it happen then there is a slight chance. But even then that timeline seems optimistic.
Ah, zee rotating Nazi Space Station! I did nazi zat coming mien fuehrer!
Well, it’s not like invading Poland.
Microfluidics make it possible. No, you can’t see the tech. It’s revolutionary and proprietary. Trust me. Now give me a billion dollars.
They are probably calling it that because that type of station design is attributed to him.
Does anyone else hear Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz?
AHHHHHahahaha!
when I saw that they’d rent space to " national space agencies conducting low gravity research" I immediately thought of this story, even though it is different and mostly unrelated.
meanwhile a place to see if shit works better when there is less gravity tugging on it is a useful thing. I just think the luxury hotel part should be done away with. not to mention people already pay massive amounts for a lesser space experience and its less fancy than camping so there is no need for luxury stations yet (or ever)
So ideally they’d need an investor who is keen on building hotels, has access to heavy launch facilities, and doesn’t mind naming things after Nazis.
Is it just me, or do you think they’re angling for federal funding?
and barfing babies.
Especially since we have Lancelot R. Gilligrass occupying the White House.
It just seems like an implausibly tight deadline for something that won’t immediately end in deadly disaster, at a price that’s orders of magnitude beyond what they could possibly make back. But I suppose if someone is rich and reckless enough…
they didnt saw “For all Mankind” before anoucing the name of this “hotel”…
edit/ but as others pointed out, the design is just known as the “von-braun-space-station” cause it was his design, so theres that.
