I just read their subsequent collaboration “Chivalry” in the library yesterday! And got out a book by Hannah Eaton and my daughter got out the Death Gaiman comic.

He means that whiteness is restricted to mean only a person of northern European extraction, so no, an Asian actor would not do for people who are hell-bent on “racial purity” in their mythologies. White supremacy demands we project our own fucked up social constructs back into the past in order to naturalize and justify it… same old, same old racism warmed over with a veneer of “common sense”…

Not necessarily. Miners tended to be small, both by nature of their profession (and possibly malnutrition. They weren’t exactly high on the social totem pole) and by self selection (tall people simply don’t fit). It just so happens that we actually have images of what early modern German miners would have looked like, by virtue of Georg Agricola, the first celebrity mining engineer, who left us a comprehensive illustrated account of 16th century mining.
If you look at the guy in the lower right corner especially, you can see where the popular image of dwarves might come from

The last Grand Theft Auto game takes place in Almost Los Angeles. The Beverly Center is like five blocks from the Santa Monica Pier, that sort of thing.
Playing that game feels the same as when you’re super drunk and a friend drives you home. Ohhhh man, we’re already downtown? I thought we were just in Mar Vista… wait, we’re at the Getty Center? Cool…

ETA: And yeah, I get that some porn stars have crossed the divide, but that’s been for directors like John Waters et al. Not a Disney production. Too much of a shift, and likely to anger a lot of parents because of the brouhaha that would ensue.

Yeah, the version I first heard as a kid was Snow White and Rose Red, but of course with Disney the relationships between women must be adversarial so the sister had to go:
Not that this version didn’t have other big flaws, but it’s what always comes to mind when folks harp about how one character was supposed to look, based on her name.

This is from Sleeping Beauty, anyway…in the older versions of Snow White she got jarred awake. People change these stories all the time, you’d think “oh, Ms. White is just her family name” would be an easy enough one to handle.

Seanan McGuire took that and ran w/ it. The snow white character in her Indexing books talks several times about how odd people thinks she looks, and the negative attention she gets. Her lips are fresh blood crimson, not the burgundy in the photos linked in the thread and her skin paper white. And prone to sunburn
There is also a lot of unpacking the horrors in fairy tails in the Indexing books.

On topic: the Little Mermaid remake was meh for me and my husband. My 6 year old was enchanted, so purpose fulfilled. She overheard us talking about the conservative meltdown over Halle Bailey. When I explained they were upset because this Ariel wasn’t white, she said “but mom, that’s just stupid.” Couldn’t disagree.
I’m glad Disney turned course on the seven dwarves. Peter Dinklage has done some awesome work using his fame to advocate for people with dwarfism.

I actually learned to find my way around a good portion of Manhattan playing this text adventure.
In addition to being a text adventure, the game simulates life in Manhattan. Disch’s model covered every block and street corner south of 110th Street. A hard-copy map of the streets and subways of Manhattan is included in the packaging. Players move from place to place on foot, and have to reach destinations at the correct time of day to initiate plot developments. Stores open and close at the correct times, street lights turn on, and other aspects of New York City life are simulated. Almost 4000 separate Manhattan locations, including 650 streets, are part of the game.

Apparently child miners were pretty standard (which makes sense - easier to get into smaller tunnels and crevices), and the phenomenon of child miners showing unusually stunted growth was remarked upon in records from a number of different places, including Germany. So you had both child and adult miners (who had started as children) of unusually short stature. (Mostly kids, though, as apparently accidents and the traumas that stunted their growth also meant they tended not to live very long.)
