Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

So I shouldn’t worry about suddenly hearing pew! pew! pew! after being vaccinated. Good.

"David, do you know anyone who's been been hit by a bus? No? Now do we still believe in buses, or are ya gonna go and walk out in front of the number 42; because right now, I wouldn't stop ya..."

Damn…

Can’t even call that ‘a burn’ because:

Currently residing in Germany, I’m relieved to hear that other countries also don’t have consistent, understandable and well implemented regulations.

I don’t even try to comment further. There’s just too much to unpack and consider.

ETA: sorry for posting this in the wrong topic first, thanks for fixing this.

I would guess - but this is only a guess - that this would be less necessary than expected at the first thought. Airliners have very dry ambient air, airflow is optimised not to spread anything between rows, and AFAIK the to have HEPA filters in the AC. Temperature difference inside/outside the mask is also low, which means much less condensation. If you can, you can change. And if you do it properly, your personal risk is lowered. But I think it might be rather low, anyway.

Yes, the aircraft filtration seems to work very well, but I wouldn’t trust it if there are strangers on either side of you.

On my trip from Oslo to Honolulu I found swapping masks every few hours made the experience more pleasant.

Seattle woman, 90, walks 6 miles through snow for vaccine - ABC News (go.com)

On the one hand, she is a beast! On the other hand, this should not happen ever, and especially in the US of A. And yet, here we are.

Well done her, although she will be held up as a false example of pulling oneself up by ones bootstraps.

“See if you were like here you could get a vaccine too!”

Florida official latest to step down nationwide during COVID-19 response - ABC News (go.com)

“It’s been two years, he’s worked extremely hard and his family’s almost a world away, in some respects,” DeSantis said.

"I think Florida has the best emergency response in the country," he added. "I think Jared was a big reason why."

And that pretty much says it all. Also, did DeathSantis just accuse this guy of mass murder? Because it sounded like he just accused him of mass murder.

COVID-19 Antibody Testing Results Dim Hope for Herd Immunity in Virginia

Statewide blood testing for COVID-19 has found that only 2% of Virginians had antibodies to the virus as of mid-August. The result has prompted the researchers to conclude that herd immunity in Virginia is “currently not a plausible means of ending the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Approximately 2.8 times more Virginians had antibodies than had been identified by the state’s PCR testing, the researchers report. That ratio is lower than many estimates predicting how much of the country’s population may already have COVID-19 antibodies.

Hispanic study participants had the highest exposure rate, with more than 10% having antibodies. Other groups with “notably higher” rates included Northern Virginia residents (4.4%), those aged 40 to 49 (4.4%) and the uninsured (5.9%). Prevalence by zip code ranged from 0% to 20%. Often, neighboring zip codes produced dramatically different results, the researchers say.

“We carefully follow case counts but need to recognize case counts are an underestimate of the true number of COVID infections,” said Eric Houpt, MD , the chief of UVA Health’s Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health. “If we use these data to project to today, we would project that as of February 2021, still under 20% of Virginians may have been exposed to the virus.”

This is not particularly good news, but interesting nonetheless. (Note the dates. Mid-August was a long time ago in Covid-time.)

i wonder what the antibody percentage for hispanics in the meatpacking industry?

Excellent, unanswered question. Suspect TPTB probably don’t really want that answer, though.

and related, here in the states… ( not sure if it’s been posted here before. )

In a study posted Sunday, a team of researchers spotted seven new variants in states across the country — all of which originated here, and all of which have independently acquired a particular mutation that could make them more contagious.

an easily foreseeable ( and foreseen ) result of letting the virus spread wild here.

How is that useful? Mid-August, no one had a vaccine. According to the state dashboard, 12.4% of Virginians have been vaccinated so far. Run the study again.

Science works gradually. You can bet that studies like this are conducted at this very moment. We learn from studies which are thoroughly conducted, and analyzed. This takes time.

Probably, but also probably not as literally as I think we’d all like after today…
