Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

As we read the article, we see it was Peter Marks’s “Operation Warp Speed,” Peter Marks who began working for the FDA under Obama and who was appointed to his current position by Obama

So, yes, giving credit to Trump would be awful

Uh, sorry to say, but too the best of my knowledge, children under six are not included in any of the studies in regard to admissions.

My niece is four, and transplanted, i.e. immunosuppressed. She’s entirely dependent on herd immunity. Right now, none of her peers can get vaccinated, and according to the national and regional priorisations, not even her family can get vaccinated.

I know. It may be a year or more, but she will eventually get her vaccine. I don’t think we, as a world, can just leave the smallest unvaccinated. Unfortunately Covid is probablynot going away.

That is awful. I hope they can secure vaccines soon so she can at least have vaccinated adults around her.

Thankfully, this pandemic is caused by a virus which causes less severe symptoms, and a very low proportion of difficult cases as well as a comparably low proportion of long-term effects in very young children (caveat for the last part: WDKS, yet, but at least that’s the current state of knowledge, so please don’t get angry at me for phrasing it this way… I know.).

But this is not necessarily the case for the next one.

Which leaves us with a massive problem, because everyone and me should have learned by now that it is bloody unlikely that youngsters are going to get vaccinated soonish for the simple reason that it’s difficult to do proper, ethically and scientifically unquestionable studies together for kids from 0 to, say, four.

With more than a million of its 7-million population now in receipt of at least one COVID jab, it is way ahead of many other countries in the European Union .

This is really low, by the way; it puts Serbia well behind all US states. I don’t think we can conclude much from the Serbian situation, especially as the president has politicized the choice of vaccines to use.

I saw something possibly related here:

I haven’t been to Finland (was supposed to go last spring, but something unexpected happened), but assumed that social distancing there would be as easy/normal as it is in Norway.

Somehow this doesn’t make me feel safer:

Assuming you need at least 40ft^2/person to maintain a safe distance, that translates to around 280,000 sq feet. Some Menards stores (I think that’s where that sign is from) are three times this size.

However: my space computation is based on people spreading out uniformly across the store, which never happens.

that looks like the occupancy limit our local applebee’s is using these days in my small city in texas.

yup. from that article:

the White House lacked a plan for the “last mile” of distribution, leaving that to the states while lobbying Congress not to pass much-needed funding that would spur state and local governments to get the vaccine into arms.

warp speed could have traded money for intellectual property, instead there’s something like 6 billion that got laundered through a defense company and we’ll probably never know exactly how it got spent.

not forgetting the many times that trump said the virus would be completely eradicated, and the many shifting dates for that miraculous date – with warp speed they promised 100 million doses by the end of 2020, shortly before the end of the year the promise was reduced to 20 million.

in reality, as of jan 6th they managed to distribute 17.2 million, but only 5.3 million had been administered.

so basically, like always, they had no idea what they were doing and no plan anyone could rely on.

( oh yeah, and it was the biden administration which brought johnson and johnson together with merck to boost manufacturing – exactly the kind of deal making trump lauds but cant actually manage to do himself )
