Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

oh wow. i had no idea that the timing between the doses could be delayed so long.

it does seems to make sense to try to get the most number of people at least some protection, rather than only a small subset more fully protected.

“Two exceptions remain: employees with underlying health condition or conflicting religious beliefs.”

Well, this is going to be fun. /s

Sigh. This is a bit annoying, but the worrying thing is it’s the Indian variant and it looks like the transmissibility is way higher, with most cases traced because people were in the same office for minutes.

Whar? Wahr can I findz that?

I love how Gibraltar is doing it.

They are vaccinating commuters from Spain, an important group in their labour market and, of course, in their communities.

That said, I want a dashboard on doses donated to COVAX (and beyond) per country, and per country weighted by different factors (doses promised, doses produced, own national vaccination progress, GDP, own population size…).

Are the athletes going to be required to be vaccinated?

No requirement. The IOC recently said they believe that already 75 percent of athletes are vaccinated, or 75 percent of people who will be in the Olympic village are vaccinated. I have no idea where they’re getting that number from. Frankly, it strikes me as a bit fishy because the US Olympic Committee—the biggest Olympic committee, the one that will be sending probably the most athletes, from a country where the vaccine is widely available—they have said they are not tracking vaccination. There are no mandates. There’s no way to keep track of any of this.

Also, remember this idiot when he said he would refuse the shot and shortly after that he got sick?

So, here is the latest at my office. We will begin stocking the Pfizer vaccine and giving it routinely to 12 and ups, which is great. We do not have an ultracold fridge, but we can store in a regular fridge for up to a month, so no biggie. The part that sets my teeth on edge was these are multidose vials, 5-6 doses each. Once the seal is punctured, it has to be used up that day. What happens then? We pitch them. We are told “at this point, supply exceeds demand, so wastage is not a problem.” While this is true here, knowing the situation worldwide, I am just not feeling that answer. Of course, the “you need to eat it all, there are starving children in China” answer is nonsense, I know this is just privilege guilt, but damn…

Are there any at-risk neighborhoods near you? Someplace where you could meet with church/mosque/synagogue officials (or the local alderman, whoever is a respected leader in the community) to arrange an agreement that you will call if it looks likely that you will have extra doses available at the end of the day?

Here, some brew pubs have been hosting vaccination events. Not exactly at risk (other efforts are going on in that arena), but it’s reaching people that might not otherwise seek them out, and making it really easy. Might be another option.
We talked to our brewer friend last night about this and they hadn’t thought of it before, so fingers crossed. We’re the 2nd largest city in the state but so far, wouldn’t know it from vaccination availability and rates.

That’s actually a really good idea. Only problem I see is the lack of predictability, but I will look into it.

Our region has set up a “Stand By” list.

There are the usual eligibility criteria. You must be able to be at the clinic 15 to 30 minutes after getting a call. The list opens weekly on Monday, is cleared on Sunday, maximum 1000 waiting. This just formalizes what has been happening anyway, putting a bit more resources into it.

I read that is not a serious Flu. This new virus doesn’t seem to be that dangerous or that contagious…

Hope we don’t have to split the thread…

So do I.

Behold the The multi virus thread! No, thanks!

But if this or another virus becomes a threat, I hope the authorities had learnt the lesson and could give a better response to these health/sanitary emergencies.
