Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

Okay, a question here if I may – does anyone here have information about children dying from Covid-19 without pre-existing conditions or chronic illnesses? I’ve been involved in a Facebook argument (I know, I know…) with some people who claim that vaccinating kids is bad because Covid is “harmless” to children. I’ve already pointed out long Covid issues, but they seem fixated on deaths as the only “real” measure.

Not quite what you asked for but here’s the provisional CDC data showing all US deaths from covid through 8/18/21.

https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Deaths-Focus-on-Ages-0-18-Yea/nr4s-juj3

134 deaths age 0-4, 296 deaths age 5-18.

I agree it would be useful to know how many of those victims had pre-existing conditions.

the caveat being the delta virus definitely affects younger people where the og strain did not so much.

the more accurate and probably horrific numbers will be better known about a month after schools start/ed

It hadn’t occurred to me to talk about coronavirus with terms from music trends but it makes a lot of sense. Next phase, new wave, delta craze. Anyway.

Sorry. Gallows humor seems to be the main type left.

i hate that the vaccines have gotten such a bad rap. if people would tune out the misinformation and listen to the facts, we’d have this thing beat.

That sounds more like a Russian information warfare operative than “a woman.”

Divide and conquer.

On my favorite local group I pointed out how they won’t take an FDA approved vaccine but they will take a non approved drug like ivermectin.

They said it was approved, I said for parasites.

To which a few people learned me that all viruses are parasites.

I swear they read something and then latch onto it and no matter how you explain it to them…

I wonder if the doctors that treat AIDS patients are hip to the parasite thing.

Why? I mean, maybe a few were already on death’s door, but it’s highly unlikely that all those kids were going to die if they didn’t have COVID. A kid with asthma who dies of COVID isn’t any less tragic than a kid who doesn’t have asthma.

It’s kind of insulting to value those lives less than fully healthy kids.

No argument there. But from a public health perspective it’s always useful to have a clear idea of which risk factors make a difference in mortality. For example if it turned out that 85% of the kids who died had asthma then we could focus resources on the asthmatic kids at highest risk.

Agreed, but in the context of arguing with an anti-vaxxer, it’s better not to play the game by their Calvinball rules.

Are you suggesting that if you had reliable data showing that only 5% of kids who died of covid had preexisting conditions that you wouldn’t’ use that as one argument (among others) in favor of all children receiving the vaccine?

I’m suggesting that it’s unnecessary. It’s accepting their false premise that kids with some kind of illness are worth less than kids without. I’m not ok with that baseline.

Yesterday I went to my first indoor live show since January 2020. The venue had strict mask requirements and said that people would be ejected for noncompliance. They were even handing out masks to people wearing things like neck gaiters. I wore a KN95 mask throughout the entire event not removing it even once.

Despite the threats of enforcement, there was basically none. (Shocking, I know.) There were plenty of dicknosers and chin diapers of course, but many more who said fuck it and decided not to wear a mask at all. Security simply looked the other way.

I hope I don’t get sick.

The last excuse they give before “The dog ate it.”

As schools open around the country, look for this to become a pattern. It sucks.
