From the BBC liveblog:

It’s worth noting that he’s been in hospital with abdominal pain on several previous occasions since September 2018, when he was stabbed during a campaign rally ahead of the presidential elections that got him into office.

At the time, the far-right politician was the front-runner and he was attacked in a crowd in the south-east state of Minas Gerais.

However, some are raising questions about the timing of this reported hospital admission - federal deputy Andre Janones tweets: “Fearing being arrested, Bolsonaro is admitted to a hospital in the United States, alleging strong abdominal pain.”

I’d guess this is all a headache for Biden and Co.

On the one hand, yay democracy and boo to an insurrection that so closely resembles the 1/6 event that threatened Biden’s presidency .

On the other, the US is no fan, to say the least, of lefty governments south of its border (which should be obvious to anyone willing to look honestly at, for starters, the decades long suppression via embargo of Cuba). At least some in US seats of power are all too glad to see sand thrown into Lula’s gears.

Mean people used to joke that every time Mr. Bolsonaro had to attend an unpleasant event, lijke a debate for example, he claimed stomach problems.Every time he gets into trouble or sees a dip in his popularity, He or His kids are left to dwell on the episode of that stabbing. They usually ask who ordered him to be stabbed. The problem is that the federal police determined that it was the work of a lone wolf who was declared insane by justice and at the time neither Mr. Bolsonaro, nor his offspring questioned the outcome of that inquiry. Even so, he always explores the most dramatic aspects of this crime, abusing photos of his belly, scars or nude poses in a hospital bed.

Okay, that seems like too much of a coincidence, but it must really be consequences of the 2018 stabbing.

The last time was some shrimps. The doctors said he didn’t properly chew the crustaceans.

So far, they seem to be all in on Lula, but who knows what’s going on behind the scenes…

Everytime they wanted to topple an elected presidente in Latin America, specially in Brazil, the insurrectionists relied on the military. You cannot get a proper coup d’ état without the military and/or the consent of the American Foreign Department. This time these guys don’t have any of them.

That’s why I think it was more a psyops or another step into the destabilization of the government, than a coup itself. Little by little they want to instaure the chaos and then someone will arise triumphant bringing order.

Makes sense. If you keep pushing this kind of destabilization, how long before the CIA would back an actual coup in the name of “stability”… I hope that Biden is genuine about his support of Lula and his government.

They didn’t count that Mr. Trump would lose the election. It probably thwarted their plans, or at least it made everything more complicated.

Sounds like a very serious case of factious disorder.

I wonder if security will be recalled.

Mr. Bolsonaro plans to stay in Florida for at least a month. In the waning moments of his administration, the federal government authorized a security detail to follow him to the U.S. until January 30.

Probably not.

Despite not admitting it to his acolytes or to himself, Mr. Bolsonaro is a former president and is entitled to assistants and security guards.

This trip to visit the Disney parks was very providential. He can claim that he had nothing to do with the state of affairs in Brazil. He says whoever accuses him is being flippant and must be a communist, an umbrella term that covers the whole spectrum of things he doesn’t like.

There are strains of America’s right wing that fantasize about a military takeover expunging their various political enemies. This is a huge thing, especially, for QAnon supporters, who spend all day posting online about putting random celebrities in military tribunals. But it’s far less vague of a goal for Bolsominions, many of whom remember Brazil’s last dictatorship, which began with a coup d’état in 1964 and ended two decades later in 1985. And like all effective populists, Bolsonaro knew how to tap into the nostalgia the bored middle class had for that era and repeatedly praised Brazil’s dictatorship days during his campaign in 2018.

It seems like the plan on Sunday was for his supporters to create so much anarchy and chaos that the military would have to step in and take control of the country, just as they did in the 60s. This led to a particularly embarrassing moment in Brasilia yesterday when Bolsominions cheered for the military when they showed up, only to be immediately arrested by them.

They called for a military intervention (an euphemism for coup), then the military really intervened.
