You failed to mention one thing: PT the party of your so-called “leftist” turned Brazil into shambles. The only reason why this right wing psychopath has any sort of traction is that PT together with the center and right wing parties stole money enough to start a new country. So this is news are quite empty, obviously that Boing Boing isn’t a very reliable source of international politics, but this you should do a more in-depth investigation instead of just throw some facts without context.

And yes… we need good luck, we’re fucked.

I second filipelabreof. This is an extremely complex situation and as Filipe said, the only reason this lunatic’s campaing is getting any traction is the fact that the Labour party has been in power in Brazil for the past 13 years, having most of its leaders been linked to what is widely regarded as the largest corruption cases in history (yes, in history, see it here).

This is simply NOT a detail that an article such as this should chose to ignore.

That could never happen in the US.
The Republicans would run the fascist candidate. The Democrats would block the Socialist and “triangulate” by running a slightly-less-fascist one
