Coup d´état attempt in Brazil

As several Far right influencers were banned from Twitter and other social network, some people think the situation escalated too quickly…

From the story from September:

In 2019, a few months after Mr. Bolsonaro took office, a one-page document vastly expanded the Supreme Court’s authority.

At the time, the court was facing attacks online from some of Mr. Bolsonaro’s supporters. Typically, law enforcement officers or prosecutors would have to open an investigation into such activity, but they had not.

So Mr. Toffoli, the court’s chief justice, issued an order granting the Supreme Court itself the authority to open an investigation.

That’s some context which I was missing for all of these stories about what the Supreme Court has been doing.

It caused a lot of confusion here. The Bolsonaristas are very upset, but some people who aren´t acolytes of Mr. Bolsonaro are concerned too.

But these clashes are not new. They started even before Mr. Bolsonaro being elected.

In the U.S. such things might traditionally be led by “attorneys general,” “special prosecutors,” or “grand juries,” but in other countries it’s not unusual for the judicial branches to investigate crimes

“out of context”… yeah, they thought they’d get the military behind them for their coup! That’s the context!

They are investiganting who paid for the riots. But I am not sure if they are going too far…

“out of context” is a kind of catchphrase used by a lot of politicians in Brazil. When they say something very nasty, they blush and say evil people are taking their words out of context. We are used to it. It seems nobody stand for their words or worldviews anymore.

I hope they figure it out and arrest the fuckers. Maybe if you guys actually have some consequences for your authoritarians, that might prompt us to do something similar.

I don’t know if they will getr all the people implicated in this adventure. But at least some of them are very afraid of a visit from the police.

Mr. Bolsonaro could face some time in Jail or lose the right to run for political office.

Seems likely at least some will get thrown under the bus to protect the ring leaders… pretty much many of the people who did the actual storming of the US capitol are getting convicted… And there has been some light consequences (disbarrment, etc) for some of the higher ups, but we’re still waiting for Trump to go down here. Which seems a possibility, actually. The final report on Jan. 6th seems to have placed the blame squarely on trump’s shoulders, rather than bring in others (like it sought to steer clear on the Christian dominionist groups, for one, and the GOP)…

Would be interesting to see if some of the funders of this down there are willing to give Bolsonaro to protect themselves? I seriously doubt he planned all this shit by himself.

But like here with Trump, it seems like the probe needs to go deeper, but likely won’t if they can get Bolsonaro…

It is possible. We have a saying here in Brazil that roughly goes something like “An ugly son has no father”. And as the days pass by, Mr. Bolsonaro doesn’t get prettier.

Some apocryphal statements published in the local press suggest that many people who supported Mr. Bolsonaro and benefited from his controversial figure, are now trying to keep their distance from him.

For example, the leader of the Liberal Party, Mr. Valdemar Costa Neto, pondered the events of the last few days and seems to regret the choices he made last year, in welcoming Mr. Bolsobnaro in his party and needlessly fighting the Supreme Court. Now He wants to court Mr. Zema, governor of the state of Minas Gerais.

So, maybe, there’s a chance they could get Mr. Bolsonaro and send him to the Jail.

Probably He will face harsh conditions in jail.

‘That’s how prison works’

The judge then asked the defendant if he’d mind if the judge knocked on his forehead with his gavel ‘to see if it sounded hollow’

The arrest of these people who were breaking everything in Brasilia awakened the Brazilian reactionaries to the harsh prison conditions in the country. These people are even advocating for prisoners to have access to representatives of the ministry of human rights! A little more time behind bars, they will be defending leftist agendas.

I’m often critical of prison’s ability to “reform” criminals but this is a heartwarming story of hardened, shameless criminals changing through incarceration.

You love to see it!
