Courts and cops don't know what to do with "sovereign citizens," the delusional far-rightists who claim the law doesn't apply to them

It’s deportations all the way down.

Ugh…Sovereign Citizens are just the Anti-Vaxxers of the tax world at best (No clue how things work - but sure that they are right) and domestic terrorists at worst.

They don’t want to be US citizens? Ask them if they will sign off on legally renouncing their citizenship…and then give them the boot.

ooh, I like this way of putting it

Wesley Snipes didn’t use the Sovereign Citizen argument, he used a different bogus tax defense that claims that domestic wages and income aren’t taxable. You can read on the 861 argument here

That is just ONE of the reasons Snipes went to jail. The Irwin Schiffs of the world (thank god that SOB is dead) do a lot of damage to the lives of people who want to believe them.

861 is a common argument of the sov-cits. They claim they are resident aliens.

It’s real if they can use it, it’s fake if they owe it.

There’s no consistency really, in their beliefs. A common part of the main sovereign citizen delusion involves a belief that there are secret accounts in everyone’s names (simultaneously they also believe that the US government was bought by a corporation a century ago, which now owns everyone in the country, which is a bit of a contradiction) with $630,000 apiece in them. (Apparently they’re consistent about that specific number.) They also believe that they can get that money by filling out an OID income form for the IRS. That doesn’t really explain why they claim fake income and fake withholdings to get it, though, if they honestly thought they were owed it. But I guess the fact that several thousand people do this every year, but only a couple dozen get prosecuted for it makes them think it’s safe (if not legit).

Must be extra fun arguing with one in Britain, where “legal precedent” could include weird shit scratched on rocks thousands of years ago

Or Flat-Earthers of the tax world…

As far as I am aware Snipes didn’t actually claim to be a sovereign citizen, though he did use similar arguments in his defense of tax evasion.

The fact that he actually went to jail over it further illustrates the differences between how the cops and the courts tend to treat white “sovereign citizens” versus nonwhite scofflaws.

And let’s not forget that Wesley Snipes is “rich and famous,” and that preferred status still didn’t keep his ass out of jail.

White privilege is very much a determining factor in almost every aspect of US society.

Snipes went to jail for owing millions of $ to the IRS; in his case, race had nothing to with it. But when it comes to some white good 'ol boy refusing to produce his driver license for a cop compared to a black guy, that’s when you’ll see the difference.

Snipes: Wait, I’m on your side! Remember that time I played a law enforcement officer in Passenger 57?

Cop: That movie was stupid.

Snipes: What about that skydiving cop movie Drop Zone?

Cop: [shudder] I’d start exercising my right to remain silent if I were you.

It’s interesting that some folks would contest the idea that Snipes’ race played any factor in his incarceration especially when one considers that there are other ‘equivalent’ celebs in the same or worse situations who didn’t end up in jail for not paying their taxes… like Willie Nelson or Nicholas Cage.

Rather different cases between Snipes and Cage; Cage owed $600,000 for claiming dubious personal expenses, and paid up when asked, Snipes owed over $6 million for failing to file any taxes at all, and refused to pay.

And how by that point in the MCU everyone was pretty much done with putting up with any of Loki’s bullshit (not that Cap ever did). Loki is the fail-trolley of the Marvel universe.
