Creepy Victorian era advertising fad

Originally published at: https://boingboing.net/2018/09/14/creepy-victorian-era-advertisi.html

This style never left, you can see it in the NYC subway all the time. Iit’s mostly sustained by guerilla artists cutting and peeling back to the layers of previous ads underneath. A few clever marketers have co-opted effect for “legitimate” adverts too. will take some pics on my way home if I see any good ones.

Off-topic, but from the same page - you can leave it to Reddit to find the true heart of the matter…

And it wouldn’t be old-timey advertising without some racism, not that us new-timey folk are much better.

WTF are ‘blood bitters’?

Not as creepy as this…

Whoa! That one on the right is the cover for The Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings single, I never knew it wasn’t created specifically for that release!

It was edited so the “Burdock Blood Bitters” text was barely visible, I always wondered what that meantjpeg

Apparently blood bitters made from burdocks.

Good for what ails you. And your little dog too.

Significantly less “creepy and annoying” than the pictures of mouths in eye sockets and bleeding eyes that routinely show up on BB.

I remember seeing a Donald version as well, with duck butt poking out the back.

I’ve wanted to haul some roots out of the garden and try this:
