Jim Byers, a host on the Washington-area radio station WPFW who is at work on a documentary film titled âJoyce Bryant: The Lost Diva,â said that Ms. Bryant was cast in several movies but that her scenes were cut when Southern distributors refused to show a movie that depicted a Black woman in a glamorous role.

Byers, the documentary filmmaker, said in an interview that he was drawn to Ms. Bryant because she was a person âdetermined to live her life on her own terms.â
âShe was willing to walk away from everything that everyone wanted her to do, all the things that society expected her to do,â he said. âShe turned her back on it ⊠for her own strength of character.â
Yeah! Jim Byers hosts part of the âLatin Flavorâ programming on Sunday evenings. Had no idea he was working on this.

He was an amazing dancer, mentor to younger dancers, and yet clearly he was hiding severe clinical depression.
This is a huge loss.
