As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Davis laid out the themes and chords before the tape rolled, and then the band improvised.)
And those are all the first take which is just freaking mind blowing isn’t it?

Did you know Django Reinhardt would often learn new tunes in the taxi on the way to the studio and often do one take of them in the studio since they didn’t have the money for much studio time?
