Couple of suggestions
Use double thickness for the frame (or more).
Cut the interior corners away from the corner so you do not cut beyond, then join those cuts with several longer, smooth cuts, getting progressively deeper, down each side.
Mount the picture on a slightly smaller piece of board so that it “floats”.

Or use the cardboard for sculpture – hot glue gun is ideal for almost instant gluing.
