Does cyanide really smell like almonds? An investigation

Covered in any giod military training manual on handling poison gas attacks since at least the 1940’s.

Future video science experiments TBD.

This seems like an even worse version of the “Honey, taste this. Do you think this milk has gone bad?”

“Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?” :flushed:

This is why you’ll find so many dual-flavor things out there like mango-watermelon, raspberry-lime, etc. Alone, it doesn’t smell or taste quite right, but blended with a complementary flavor the experience is less jarring.

Well, the key point is that bitter almonds only smell like cyanide because… they actually contain a lot of cyanide. And they kinda don’t normally really smell like cyanide, anyway! And certainly the statement primes people to think that cyanide smells almondy, when the actual smell is quite different from what most people expect.

I think the video makes a quite compelling case that teachers etc should really stop telling students about the “smelling like (bitter) almonds” thing. It’s not useful, and in fact potentially very dangerous if it gives people a false sense of security.
