Dog chases walruses off dock

Those blasted sovereign sea-tizens.

I wish we would all stop using “the law” as a tool in arguments.

How about we make our arguments based on right and wrong, logical consistency, and avoiding hypocrisy; since we all know “the law” is flawed and available to the highest bidder.

Fuck “the law”.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act is a law that was enacted for good reason. Fuck anyone who harasses sea lions or willingly allows their dog to do so.

Those are bloggers, it’s a schadenfreude, and they’re laying on the zeitgeist.

The law isn’t what makes being a jerk wrong. It’s as lazy as saying “the bible” in an argument and propagates the false narrative that because something is law it is fair and/or right.

But it’s often the only way to hold a jerk accountable for his actions. So there’s that.

What percentage of the time do you think the law actually delivers justice fairly Vs. how often it does the opposite or nothing at all?

I don’t feel up for the “government vs. anarchy” debate today.

How about we all just agree that it’s a bad idea to let your dog harass sea mammals and leave it at that.

Seems fair, but you’re unwilling to agree that blindly following “the law” just because it’s called “the law” seems unreasonable, so…

And I haven’t sad a single thing you could debate without first establishing the fairness of the law. You know you can’t even if you were willing to be a hypocrite to that extreme.

Oh, I get it. Sealioning. Well done, sir.

I work at a marina. We call them docks, or this could be a finger off the main dock. And it’s a spud pole at the end of the finger.

This is Richmond Park. It has police, not rangers, and they are part of the Royal Parks Operational Command Unit. The most recent case I can find is where a woman was fined £650 (about $900 then, about $5 if you can find a taker now.)

Many non-Royal parks in the UK have wardens. A few seem to have rangers but this may be a US import.

Jesus I wish I was that clever. No. I sincerely believe that in general we would all be better off if we started using complete reasoning rather than to rely on accepted convention. “the law” as you allude, may be a legal means of retribution but I maintain it is hardly ever used properly or effectively and that punishment isn’t a replacement for reasoning.

And everyone has an area of the law they personally violate and can rationalize to themselves and others. Nobody actually “respects the law” they just tell other people to respect laws they personally agree with then they go home and buy weed or look at bestiality porn or download movies illegally, etc.

Stop respecting convention just because it’s convenient for people who don’t get reasoning. Explain things to people, confront the elements of society you disagree with, alone or with like-minded people, instead of relying on a law to shape your society.

You with Standing Rock or not? Are they within the law? You think they should be?

I was certainly cheering all the quadrupeds in that one.

There was a recent episode of This American Life that described the ongoing dispute and escalating violence between animal activists and local residents in La Jolla, CA about a rookery of harbor seals that took over a popular beach*. Basically everyone in the story comes across as a major asshole.

*I recently visited this beach which prompted me to re-listen to the story. While I’m not a fan of disturbing wildlife, it’s important to note that sea lions and harbor seals are not endangered and that beach fucking stinks to high heaven now due to infestation of seal and seagull poop.

Those are horkers on the quay, but I don’t recognize the werewolf.
