Dolly Parton gracefully declines nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

And as someone upthread pointed out, plenty of non rock acts have been inducted…

But also… fuck the R-n-R HOF…

If I was going to be inducted in to anywhere, it would most likely be RnR HOP.

Rock n roll house of pancakes?

If that isn’t a Wesley Willis song, it should be.

I dunno if it ‘rocks’ but it does still SLAP:

Dear Wife and I do a Psycho Billy cover of 9 to 5, we rip it in just under 2 minutes, nothing fancy but it works for us, and I always finish it with a good loud hardy “I fucking quit”.

Badass!

That is also a fine description of Dolly Parton.

Indeed.

This is the best quality I could find of this but here is Richie Sambora and Dolly rockin’ out.

There’s a better version at Glastonbury from 2014, AXS TV shows the entire set occasionally, Dolly is quite the performer.

The late Sir Christopher Lee entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart when he was 91 years old. So Dolly’s not too old to go metal.

the r.n.r.h.o.f. has pissed me off from the beginning.

When did Cleveland become Yankistan’s Hark ‘n’ Roll! hot spot? It’s a pretty cool town, with a good scene, and lotsa weird groups, but…it’s not the first city which springs to mind when thinking of such things. I am not saying this b/c I’m from Motown, either, it’s just that I’ll think of NYC, Chicago, and El Lay long before Cleveland.

There are waaaay more pop than rock groups in it. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if there are more inducted pop and other not-rock groups than actual rock groups.

Zackly! Been thinking that for years, and even said it tonight when my BF hipped me to Dolly’s gracious refusal.

How in Buddha’s name did the go gos* get in but not DEVO?! FFS, DEVO’s even from Ohio!

The way it’s been so heavily commercialized from the first is absolutely sneer-inducing.

Yet another good reason to be annoyed with the place.

*I’ll never forget seeing concert footage of the go gos on mtv. They were playing ‘we got the beat,’ and mom pointed out that you could see the drummer counting the entire time because she doesn’t have the beat! That rhythm is hardly complex, like any aspect of their stuff.

Dolly has a song that does rock, though, and that’s Jolene, as evidenced by the many rock covers of that song that exist, notably the White Stripes version.

Agree with most of what you say but the Go-Go’s are a very important band in music history, achieving multiple firsts along their punky career. And lots of their stuff rocks  They totally deserve their place (in this admittedly stupid institution) IMHO.

I am constantly reminded of that cross-fertilization when I listen to the radio and hear country songs now that would have been rock songs on AM radio in the 70’s. There is no clear, bright line. The Eagles were country in sound, even if rock by label. Little Big Town rocks harder than lots of current rock artists. I mean, the code, it’s more of a suggestion, really.
