The whole party is fucked and needs to go…

Probably not. At least, I’m not willing to find out.

Creepy af but then also funny that he mentions fascists in who he’s gonna throw out (well, he says half the word and drops it but it’s essentially all there). Is that his get out of jail free card for later?

Also… “Oh, not YOU fascists. You should stand by.”

How do they hope to get reelected if they throw out the fascists?

As in “C’est la lutte finale”?

I keep waiting for his fascism to level off, but he keeps going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole.

I think it’s still unclear if this is a bad trend or a short-lived backlash from recent progress. We’ll only know in hindsight, I guess.

I wish we could say Canada is immune, but have you heard the stuff Danielle Smith and Peter Poilievre say? It’s right out of Trump’s playbook. Doug Ford too, for that matter.

Fascism is the end of the road that starts with conservative populism and conspiracy theories. We’re a lot farther back on that road, but we do have our foot on it and are taking some dangerous steps. I’d be sleeping a lot better if Danielle Smith had lost last month. :disappointed_relieved:

From a Trumpist point of view, the fascists aren’t the people doing all the things that only fascists do, the real fascists are the people who were and still are the traditional victims of fascism.

I wish I was joking about that.

I think Smith serves a useful function as ‘cautionary example’ for the rest of the country. Her stunning incompetence is hard to mask for long, particularly with oil prices coming down. I expect and hope her stupid tantrums serve the national purpose of making everyone shy away from Polievre.

A lot will depend on how soon JT takes a walk in the snow (no need to wait until winter). His sell-by date is past.

I hope so! She won by a pretty thin margin, so I consider that hopeful. And hey, the NDP won in Alberta once recently, so maybe that’s a sign of change too. I’ve tried to explain what a big deal that was to my American friends and the best I got was “imagine if the Green Party won Texas”.

JT sure is polarizing. I still like him, but I get why most people don’t. It’s time for someone new, for sure, I just don’t want Poilievre in there. That guy is goddamn dangerous. Or a Ford. God help us if a Ford runs the country.

I think a lot of the JT hate is because they can’t find any actual policies to critique, so they focus on him instead. It helps that ‘blame a Trudeau’ is imprinted into the DNA of every person in Alberta. They blamed his Dad for the 1982 oil price crash as well, conveniently forgetting that OPEC turned on the taps and it had ZERO to do with anything in Canada.

Agreed. It’s also been pushed by Alberta politicians for a couple of decades to hate Ottawa because they hate Alberta or some such. Driving a wedge between Alberta and the rest of the country has been a conservative populist tool since at least Ralph Klein, if not sooner. It’s stupid and ultimately self-defeating. I think the Fuck Trudeau movement today is the culmination of decades of that rhetoric.

Conservatives need enemies to rally their bases because hate and anger are the only things that will get conservatives to vote. Canadians don’t have a lot of enemies generally, so Albertans have chosen the federal government to be the enemy that keeps on giving.

“With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the warmongers from our government. We will drive out the globalists, we will cast out the communists, marxists, and fascists,”
