The headline betrays a lack of knowledge of the sport of ice racing. Up in Canada, Scandinavia, etc, we race on frozen lakes all the time. Studs and rear wheel drive is a hell of a good time. Of course, the ice is checked with ground penetrating radar first and we only go when there is a large safety margin on that. Because we’re not morons.

My thought exactly, I have driven and cycled quite safely on ice. One needs to know the ice. It strikes me those idiots drove out of town and onto any handy patch of ice as the locals shock their heads and started estimating recovery charges and hotel costs in Sochi.
