The vet checked out the animals’ water trough and “observed a strange smell and found the water to be coloured,” reports RTE.

My grandfather worked at the Tullamore Dew distillery in the 40’s.

At one point some of the distillery workers, apparently involving some executives decided to funnel off whiskey before it was barreled for aging. Hiding the missing whiskey as losses during distilling.

In order to do so they tapped the still system and ran a pipe across the street into a carriage barn. Where the whiskey would dribble into vats to be collected.

They were found out when a bunch of drunk horses ran amok down the main drag. Apparently some one had crossed up the water and the whiskey and diverted the white dog to the horse troughs.

So the draft horses promptly got shit housed and tore ass around town.

This was so common that it’s still mandated that distilleries (at least in Scotland) have a “still safe”, which is a locking box surrounding the condenser parrot or spout:
