The problem with xenophobia as a culture …

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

It seems like a good idea to protect some narrow circle of people that share similar values and similar skin tone. Until the next threat comes that labels you as an outsider.

Any one of us could become refugees due to economic, environmental, or political reasons. My instinct for self-preservation tells me to treat others well and insist those around me do the same in order that I might be treated well if our roles are reversed.
