Elon Musk says civilization will "crumble" if we don't have more babies

No E M, this is not the answer to ecofascism. In fact it sounds like ordinary fascism.

Sure, but let’s not discount the media fawning over rich people, because they assume that they are morally superior, because they are wealthy…

No, it’s not, because the right wing is coming for birth control next. This is about controlling women. Sterilization is for non-white people, not white women, who is expected to produce babies, in their world view.

Oh, please: what he really means is that civilization will crumble unless white, rich people have more children. People like him. 2 billion people, a quarter of all humans, are subsistance farmers living off of less than 5 acres of land – virtually all of them want well-paying jobs, but they’re not allowed civilization because billionaires, hedge fund managers, and other greedy assholes like Musk hoard all the wealth, and won’t invest in such communities because the return on investment is uncertain.

If that’s not enough to allow me to cry “bullshit,” then there’s the 20% of Americans who are on welfare. Some are injured, some are old, but most of them would really like a nice, civilization supporting job, something with benefits, a decent rate of pay, and that won’t destroy their bodies and move them into the injured category. Go on, use a pittance of your income to lobby for job creation policies so that the existing population can be fully and efficiently utilized – and when you run out of people to hire, then you can complain about a lack of babies.

Nobody should ever be pressured to have kids for the good of society or any other reason, so Musk and anyone else who’s acting like it’s some kind of duty can go straight to hell. But the fact that American women are having fewer children than they want to due to financial pressures, lack of family leave and childcare options, etc. is a real issue.

The government can and should provide more support including universal paid family leave, subsidized child care, etc.(not because of depopulation but because it’s just the right thing to do) and CEOs like Elon should also offer generous benefits like on-site childcare. But right now companies like SpaceX (who just emailed everyone to come work a holiday weekend) aren’t exactly known for encouraging a good work/life balance. So, once again, Musk can go to hell.

Do you want Handmaid’s Tale*? Because this is how you get Handmaid’s Tale.

*seriously asking… because the “don’t tax the titans” folks have been losing any sense of perspective or caution when utilizing conspiracy pot-stirring to keep social welfare / wealth redistribution politicians out of office…

Yes, indeed, feudalism does crumble without serfs. A slave economy crumbles without slaves. And, capitalism crumbles without an underclass who voluntarily allow their own bodies to be used as grist for the mill.

If a person’s concept of civilization only includes those systems, then what he’s saying tracks. It’s a moral failure, but logical, is what I’m saying. I think he’s got a massive lack of imagination about what a civilization might entail.

Hell, I’d rather see “civilization” crumble first and start over from scratch, (even as horrible as that reality is) rather than end up like Gilead.

IMHO this is all about him being unwilling to pay enough taxes to fund Social Security and Medicare on a sustainable basis.

It is so appropriate for our timeline that this is the “genius” we get.

Not that this is worthy but that’s taking a couple of my aspects out of context. The motivation to self sterilization (if any) is of course not the supreme court’s “plan” it’s the unsought result of their “plan” which you quite accurately designate as controlling women. And yes, “they” have always wanted to attack birth control (as a researcher into male contraceptives i’m unusually aware of this). And yes, some scheme toward forcing sterilization on a non-white person has always been a white supremacist goal, whereas, again my lame point is that their nasty schemes could well back-fire in that regard. That is, my gormless context was via in the minds of the victims, not the victimizers where you shifted the suggestion that i was centering upon. Attack ye not those who are singing in the choir alongside you [wink]

I realised that E M didn’t know about politics when he had to be told what libertarian socialism was, and how he was not one in any way. I guess he thought it was free market capitalism with corporate welfare or something.

I don’t understand why people think he will save the world, although I am starting to think that he is the leader of a cult.

He needs that extreme far-end of the curve, who will happily be shipped to indentured servitude on Mars, to be as large as possible.

Well, yeah. It’s the original pyramid scheme. Like, literally how we got the original pyramids.

Typical neoliberal worldview. More people means an oversupply of labor meaning lower wages, more people to sell goods and services too, more people to propagandize to vote a certain way, more people to belong to the religious right, more people to pay the taxes that the extremely wealthy should be paying, etc

Again. No. He’s very much of the elite class here. Stop acting like bigots and misogynists are the exception rather than the rule here. :woman_shrugging:

FTFY.

I think he’s just signaling to his alt-right tech fan club and governor Abbott that he’ll bring in sweet workers to the city on the promise of rampant misogyny and complete erosion of even the most basic bodily rights for women

“I think it is important for us to die because most of the times, people don’t change their mind, they just die. If they live forever, then we might become a very ossified society where new ideas cannot succeed,” he said.

I actually kind of agree with this statement, but given that EM is saying it, I’m now examining my stance carefully to see what’s wrong with it. My initial starting point is the last segment “… where new ideas cannot succeed.” I’m sure EM’s idea of a “new idea” and mine may differ somewhat, but then again I’m not dependent on claiming the results of other’s labor as my own. (Serfdom isn’t new.)
