European Parliament rejects copyright bill

Ehm. I think you use a different definition of ‘ripped off’ than I (and I’d think most people) do.

A shorter term would go a long way of solving this. Of course you can never really prevent people from signing bad deals with publishers, but at least that’s their own mistake.

Also, a lot of the time the copyright owners are the creators of the work. That’s even the default situation.

Without copyright, the GPL for example would be unenforceable. I’m not sure stuff like linux would exist without it.

Copyright trollies are a problem. True. But abolishing copyright is throwing away the baby with the bathwater.

These guys have the detailed answers:

Good news- none of My MEPs voted in favour. The evil one abstained, and the very evil one voted against (although, I think that’s a “stopped clock” kind of thing going on there.)

Bounces back out of committee with minor changes.

hazzuH!

So government created a problem around copyrights and protecting corporate interests by granting themselves more authority, and of course their solution to the problem they created is to grant themselves more authority. Effing brilliant. Unsurprisingly, the MSM ignores it until they figure out a way to to monetize the issue, then they lap-up the neo-liberal POV without qualification.

I am glad Parliament took a stand, I hope it sticks. Perhaps EU citizens will have a stroke of good luck and Trump will tweet his support for copyright protection in the EU.

Is there any meat in that article beyond its snarky subhead? I stopped going to the Register a long time ago. The house style of mean-spirited sarcasm got too much for me after a bit.

I got the impression that, to the degree that there was a coherent logic behind the plan, it wasn’t too concerned with non-incumbents because it was essentially pessimistic and focused on the status quo.

If you start from the position that “our Google overlords are inevitable and hegemonic and not paying us” a proposal to make them pay you, even if it also makes them more hegemonic, starts to look attractive.

What I don’t know is whether this pessimism comes more out of recent experience suggesting that it isn’t wholly unjustified; or whether it’s a tendency of rightsholder entities that, themselves, have to done their best to become inevitable and hegemonic, within their sphere, essentially imagining everyone else in their own image; and so basically viewing this as a dispute among incumbents over how the pie is to be divided.

Nah, those nice-sounding acronyms will remain the province of American lawmakers.

Assume EU lawmakers spend a month debating a particular law. If they wanted to make the acronym sound nice, they’d have to spend another year at least to decide which language it should sound nice in.
So we’ve got the DSVGO (Datenschutzgrundverordnung), the RGPD (Reglement général sur la protection des données) and the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), all referring to the same law.
Good luck finding an acronym that works as a propaganda term in all 24 official languages of the EU.

I wonder how far we’ll be pushed before we dispel with this flawed notion of society
