As expected, the EU has advanced the catastrophic Copyright Directive without fixing its terrible defects

Can we just make a new internet where we don’t mess everything up?

While everyone rags on the British Twitocracy’s no-plan Blearghxit, it’s not a bad idea to remember that everyone’s “liberal” EU “heros”, Merkel and Macron, are actually deeply horrible people making the EU and everywhere else a worse place for the benefit of the ultra-rich.

The EU has always been a neoliberal project when it came to economic and business issues, married to a liberal project vis a vis human rights, worker rights, consumer protection, and so on.

The good news is that this story seems to gain traction in the public view and that the movement in the EP to refuse this law is growing. This is not over indeed, we have to keep on fighting. Maybe even sue against this law up to the Europan Court of Justice IF the EP votes for it. Oh, and of course vote every MEP that voted for this desaster out in the upcoming elections.

I don’t know, despite opposition growing in the public, EU lawmakers, by making this worse, havs become emboldened to either ignore them as bots or mock them as an angry, ignorant mob. This is a hostile coup by Fascists, I’m telling you. These malicious, greedy and psychotic authoritarians who want to destroy the internet in order to end dissent and creativity. Because of how deep the evil is, this an uphill battle…

Neither Merkel nor Macron or other proponents of this are fascist. It’s just one of many destructive neoliberal policies.

Definitely not what I’d call an equal marriage…

As much as Cory protests, this legislation is clearly un-policeable, so his vision of an internet reduced to a couple of hundred sites seems highly improbable.

I recently had Youtube bot remove a video of my two-year dancing round the living room with My Girl Lollipop playing in the background.

If the content detection filters made by Google are this dumb, then what hope is there for the rest of the internet?

Common sense will prevail at some point.

In the mean time be prepared for the ridiculous neoliberal attempt to landgrab all the user-generated content in the world to continue…

Its authoritarianism. They don’t care about journalists, artists, or even rights holders. The excuse of doing them a favor is just a means to an end to kill the internet. Trust me, if they fail with Copyright, they will find another excuse, whether it be terrorism or “think of the children” when it comes to porn. They will use any means neccessary to pull the plug on the free and open internet.

Yes, it is, but not every authoritarianism is fascism - fascism is very specific kind of right wing authoritarianism. Corporate interests and copyright collection societies don’t care much about right wing ideology, except when it’s profitable. Politicians are the puppets, not players - lobbyists are pulling the strings.

Oh, we will. But it will be, in a way, worse.

See, what this is going to do is continue the inexorable push towards platforms that are aggressively encrypted, decentralized and difficulty-to-impossible to meddle with. The politicians can’t be trusted to carve out reasonable protections for users, so tech has to step in.

This sounds nice, and it is nice except, of course, you can’t ever deplatform anyone. To protect ourselves, we’ll need to protect everyone and that means that we’ll be sharing that new internet with a whole lot of horrible, horrible people.

Lovely.

As much as a mess as Brexit is, the EU brought it upon themselves. This law is a perfect example of the non-democratic nature of the EU that pisses people off so badly. No one wants this, and yet here it comes. This bill is a disaster not just for all citizens, but for many large corporations as well. Despite this, because some interest has captured the process, this garbage that no one wants is getting pushed through.

Something is fundamentally wrong and broken with the EU structure. Why is it that something like this that is so hated and reviled by both citizens and opposing interests is continuing to get pushed along? I don’t know what the answer is. The answer certainly isn’t right wing nationalism, but something needs to be done about the governing structure of the EU. Laws like this should not be getting made and passed.

Brexit (deal or not) is all the shit bits of being in the EU, combined with all the shit bits of not being in the EU.

Ya think? Common sense requires reasoned and intelligent thinking, two things that appear to be lacking in most higher levels of government, any government.

The last time i wrote to my MEPs about this mess i got one response from the UKIP guy (surprise, surprise) but this time? Not a peep. Although, since we will soon be crashing out of the EU under the worst possible conditions they probably don’t give a fuck. The UKIP guy is relieved we’re leaving the EU (obviously) because he believes we can avoid legislation like this, not quite understanding how the internet works. So… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No. This is not about Money as not even Rightsholders support this. Article 13 is about control by pulling the plug on the internet and shutting down opposition. The “Information Age” is a threat to the status quo, the powers that be see it fit to shut it all down.
