“Apparently, it was a stolen car and the driver likely escaped through a window.” Most likely. I mean, I suppose the back seat could fold down, giving you a path to the trunk, which could then be popped open to freedom. But that’s pretty clever, and they did use the pedestrian lane as an escape route, so I’m putting all my money on window escape. Final answer.

Wow…I get annoyed when a bike uses the pedestrian lane.

They’re shocked, shocked they tell you, to find bad driving in the city on Christmas Eve! /s

Still, I guess they gotta do whatever they can to keep viewers from switching over to Channel 9, and I suppose “You’ll be utterly unsurprised at our first story tonight of some probably intoxicated dumbass wedging a car into the pedestrian lane,” doesn’t have the same hook to it.

And how many drivers were stuck behind this car, pissed off that he wouldn’t get out of the way?

Assuming they weren’t just drunk out of their skull, it may just have been intended, not as an escape route, but as a big “fuck you” to the car owner, the cops, the city, pedestrians… (So yeah, window escape.)

If you think to use a pedestrian route as a getaway, steal a smaller car.

Speaking of which, it’s been a while since someone got a car stuck in the narrow bit by the ConEd plant in East River Park (examples: Porsche Cayenne, BMW). I suppose we’re due.

In Toronto, this finally seems to have worked:

Still, you’d think someone would try.

“Since 2014, we’ve had about 26 cars enter this tunnel and that’s despite flashing lights, the rumble strips, the bollards back at the intersection,” Green said.
