Two rabbits playing on the lawn this morning jogged an old memory of an evil book, and so I tracked it down.
tl;dr: The rabbit, Monkey’s Paw-style, uses a second wish to cancel the first after horrifying results.
The reviews are full of Pollyanna praise of the book’s superficial messages of “be careful of what you wish for” and “be happy with who you are”.
Bull! The real grim dark message for kids is “Don’t be different, never be different, or they will cast you out!”
Carolyn Sherwin Bailey, published 1945. Would not read again.

Just give em the Moomins (wait a while before lettiing them read Moominpapa At Sea. That’s some straight-up gothic horror shit, that one).
