I didn’t know you could smoke in space?

In case anyone is interested, they read: “In space” “To Mars” and “First Sputnik”, L-R

Wouldn’t that fully translate as “First Satellite”?

Technically yes, but the word has also come to mean a proper noun – in Russian as well as English – and the “artificial” was implied rather than explicitly stated.

That’s a common misunderstanding because in space no one can hear you smoke.
