First thought: this is rather sad. Second thought: this is exactly how the entire American service industry works - people pretending to be your friend (which is so normalized it’s basically considered rude if they don’t do it). The number of times non-American friends have gotten confused, certain that the person who just served them must be someone they know from some other context but didn’t recognize…

The Japanese are sophisticated about separating pretend relationships from the real thing. This seems like a cosy version of host and hostess bars.
