I want to know the purpose of those hand swiping movements near the mouth of the jug. Do they produce sound, or were they just for show?

Well, that sent me down the rathole. Here’s an interesting short history of jug bands.

(In the posted clip, that’s not a mandolin - it’s a resonator tenor guitar, a pretty rare sight these days)
