Fashion tips for sartorial improvement

Also want to add for the benefit of anyone using this thread for advice, if you like tying your ties in the four-in-hand or the half Windsor, then go for it. I only want it to be a conscious choice because I feel like a lot of people are never introduced to other knots, and people should know they have lots of great options to choose from.

Three tips!

  • Anon (r/malefashionadvice, 4chan.org/fa/, etc) are robots who learn some basic good MOR advice and regurgitate it like a religion (smug at reddit, hostile at 4chan). The former in particular is deceptively convincing to geeky dudes but won’t get you past what you already understand.

  • The men’s fashion mags are devolving into lad mags. The editors and some columnists know what they’re doing but the advice is taking on a judgy tabloid quality and the listicles almost always ruin a good point. As in: a couple of images can exemplify trend n , but 10 image-searched images will invariably include garbage.

  • search tumblr and pinterest and instagram using google (e.g. site:tumblr.com yourquery) for the things you like and just keep an eye on what’s going on.

I had a gala to attend! It was lovely. I have a mirror selfie hang on…

The shoes are helpful because I’m helpless at shoes but the rest of my ladies fashion is like “what would five year old me wear if I could have” combined with “will this damage my self image as a goth more than I will enjoy wearing it.”

I need a new body to wear this brand!!! super cute though.

Instagram and Pinterest are not places to visit on a weekday if you hope to get anything else done that afternoon.

feels pull of the rabbit hole; valiantly resists

That’s a good one. Instagram can be a decent place to look, too- though, one must be careful of the huge number of people apparently posting outfits that no rational person would ever wear.
Hit and miss, I suppose.

Damn straight! Getting an early start on being one of those old ladies who DGAF.

Those are kick-ass! I’d wear them if my feet could handle heels… :frowning:

Thanks; they really are awesome.

As a matter of fact, I did indeed wear it on set at FH at least once. Ms Bure may have raised an eyebrow or two, but a gentleman never tells.

This shirt was made for me by the fantastically talented Michael D. Hall, who was an assistant editor I worked with on The Mentalist. His eye for detail is unmatched (note how the pocket fabric is carefully placed to match the shirtfront) and god only knows where he finds these incredibly manly fabrics. His shirts sometimes appear for sale at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, especially the many Halloween patterns. He himself wears a different Halloween-pattern shirt of his own construction for every single day of the month of October.

Plus he owns pretty awesome boots that I covet. Michael’s the closest thing I have to a fashion hero.

Those are interesting. I’ll have a look see if they are available retail in Japan or not.

EDIT: looks like these are not part of Nike’s offering here. Damn them and Adidas as well in this regard.

No, I think I got those in 2008 or 9? I was too poor to get a pair in the 90s and too lazy to save up for them.

As I mentioned before, those Nike’s arent available in Japan but today I got some gray market Reebok boots:

Ended up going a size up as I’ve now got some serious late 40s foot spread going on. Not swelling but my feet have gotten wider in the last year or so and that made the GSG9-2s just too tight on days when I have to walk a few Km.

Nice. I got some fabric similar to that around the place.
