It’s exactly what you describe: a hideously expensive Selectric-on-steroids that no one would have used for routine business correspondence.
It was a rather fiddly nuisance to operate (esp. the earliest versions), that nevertheless got used for camera-ready copy because it could not only do proportional spacing, but full justification, multiple faces and multiple sizes, and made clean carbon-film-ribbon impressions that could pass for pro typesetting.
We had one at a printing company I worked for in… umm… '74 or so. Used it for finicky tables that the state-of-the-art digital imposition system we used couldn’t quite cope with. (No HTML <table> codes back then!)
This is surprisingly common in Hollywood. You also see a lot of ghastly Southern US accents because of this. In some movies everyone sounds like Foghorn Leghorn.

Yes, this was a problem with that blog shaming bad Photoshopping which assumed anything that looked awkward in a photo was a bad Photoshopping job - sometimes awkward looking things in photos are just natural, awkward looking things.

Yeah, American accents are pretty diverse all across the country.
The common mistake is assuming that any dialect coach can teach any dialect. And there are a lot of bullshit coaches out there, its a sort of easy fallback for failed actors.
Have a friend who does a bit of coaching and is quite good with accents. He won’t take that kind of work for accents he doesn’t do capably. When he’s acting he’s frequently been paired with coaches who know less than he does. You need an actor that cares and a coach that actually knows what they’re doing.
