The lyrics are so amazing.

pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon

You were there in the turnstiles
With the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars
And you know how it feels
To reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon

I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
… But you swooned!
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon

With a torch in your pocket
And the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
And you know how it feels
To get too high
Too far too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon!

Unicorns and cannonballs
Palaces and piers
Trumpets towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars
You climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like comet
Blazing your trail
Too high too far too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

Anybody else hearing a weird tremolo effect?

The original is definitely one of the best songs of the 80s. There’s other great Waterboys music, but pretty hard to beat them in their prime with Karl Wallinger still in the lineup.

This image:

is a still from an hauntingly beautiul animation by Jeff Desom with the composition “Morgenrot” by Hauschka. It has nothing to do with the Waterboys, “The Whole of The Moon” or Fiona Apple.

What is it doing in this post @garethb2 ?

Apple uses it in her video about 50 seconds in.

ETA: Just watched that Desom/Hauschka video. It is indeed lovely.

To me Fiona Apple is a musician who can not stumble.

I don’t know where the stash of authenticity is stored, but the lord has given her a key.

I recently rediscovered the original but I think this version is better.

Was a Fiona fan from WAY back in the day but this was just terrible. Her voice sounds way too raggedy and rough, also what’s with having a younger Fiona “lookalike” standing in for her in the video? I am disappoint

Love this. Covers channel on Youtube is ace: “Vintage Jukebox”

I’m sorry, but you are now outcast as a heathen.
There is far more emotion in the voice of the original, and the original’s powerful, driving, crescendoic** arrangement is very hard to beat.

@QuickBrownFox - yeah, vocals here did not do the song a service.

** I may just have trivially embettered the English language.

embiggened, even.

I am inspired to dig out the CD and rip the original, so this isn’t a total waste of time.

I thought it was this guy, and it was!!

This is amazing.
I’ve nephews and nieces in County Antrim who know every lyric of this by heart and they can sing those lyrics with heart. Her first is a Scottish name derived from “Fionnghal.”

That’s Karl Wallinger, alright. Very talented musician.
