If you look at an I-beam, it is composed of 3 " mostly-planar, flexible items." Try cutting up some paper and taping it together in an I-beam.

That’s the whole point of steel beams – they are flexible, not brittle. That’s why tall buildings sway in the wind, instead of exploding.
