Good point, this certainly is not a new phenomenon by any means. If you can find it Ian Hislop recently made an interesting programme looking into the long history of fake news. Thanks for pointing me to the Ross and Carrie pod as well, i’ll be checking that out.

Of course, but back then such “eccentrics” could not reach (generally) critical mass, they just bothered friends and family and at most bored everyone at parties. Today the aggregation capability of social media compounds the problem to such a degree that it becomes something else.
And this in spite of living in a “scientific age”. Must we admit that no progress at all has been made, and we remain the same cowering, frightened apes we always were? I’d loathe to think that.
