Was talking to a kid today who was having issues with stress and depression. Climate change came up and they mentioned feeling helpless and hopeless about it. I pointed out that Greta Thunberg had suffered from depression and found that taking action helped her. Their mom shook her head and said “that stupid girl, I would like to slap her face.” I looked at her in disbelief and the kid says "see? " I had nothing. Sometimes all I got is despair.

Discussing assaulting a child in front of a pediatrician. Kid’s biggest problem isn’t climate change.

That’s jaw-dropping. But also, “if they attack you that means it’s working” (or whatever Greta’s words in that regard were – she’s too effective to be ignored).

Anyway, I really feel for you and that kid. And the mom, since we’re probably hearing how she was raised. The grandparents’ words coming out of the mother’s mouth.

So while the non-Murdoch Australian press has been covering the fires like they’re something of a big deal, so have the major international. And the Australian Murdoch press?

NOTHING TO SEE HERE.

I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that human beings -collectively - lack the imagination and willpower to significantly alter our life support setup on the planet, at least not nearly enough to actually make an impact. We’ll rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic, make sure the band is audible throughout the ship, and even those meaningless gestures will become controversial and open to compromise.

Our economy is built on the premise that you don’t have to prove what you’re selling is safe- its someone else’s job to prove what you’re selling is dangerous. Positive feedback loops are inevitable.

While there is no way to prepare for a mass extinction level event bad enough to wipe humanity out… it does seem reasonable to expect mass casualty events in the scale of the black death-at least.

I am feeling a sense of urgency about finding a permanent nuclear waste repository and making it happen. That window of opportunity where its possible to do something effective, may well be closing.

I can’t say you’re not seeing what you’re seeing. It looks like misery for hundreds of millions is already committed. On the plus side, this is the obvious everyday reality for many youth, they don’t like it, and they’re coming. They’re voting, and they’ll be running.

Will youth influence filter upwards so that grown-ups get in line/step aside soon enough to make a difference? That’s the cliffhanger.

I have to believe this time will be different in order for me to even function. (Crazy Eddie?) I see it as we’re all activists now, and no one can sit on the sidelines. If you care, you have to find a way to make the people around you care too. If there are enough of us making the point emphatically enough, then politicians will realize they have permission to do the right thing.
