Helsingin Sanomat reports that Finnish enthusiasm for climate change action appears to have dropped since 2019.
HS wrote that according to the 2023 Climate Barometer commissioned by the government’s climate communication steering group, fewer people in Finland are choosing their parliamentary candidates based on climate issues.
A majority of respondents, 61 percent, still wanted to see climate issues tackled as a main priority. However, a similar 2019 survey in the lead-up to the previous general election said that 70 percent of respondents wanted climate change to be a top issue.
Fewer people also said they believed that climate change mitigation is urgent. In 2019, 83 percent of respondents thought that the situation was urgent, whereas only 72 percent thought so this year.
However, there was a significant change in a different direction in regards to energy saving.
Seventy-four percent were now ready to save on electricity consumption when demand is highest. Four years ago, that figure was 62 percent.
The results reflect dips in soncumption, as energy saving campaigns have produced results in Finland. In December Finnish consumers used some 10 percent less electricity than in the same month in 2021.
