Yeah, I detest fake Latin plurals. I’ve never learnt it but even I know a rake of them are wrong. I think though that’s why many on this board add ~odes as the plural of choice. It’s a písstake on people who can’t simply say octopuses in English and insist on octopi. It’s just one of the funnier fake Latin plurals “actually it’s Greek so it’s podes”.

Several times. During religious education classes, twice, during Christmas time. Also in English language classes, at least once. And once during art classes, I think. Also FTR, while I love that film, some of the jokes have a rather anal-retentive conservativeness to them for which the later but not-yet-late Cleese came to be known for… sighs)

I stand for my right to consistently be inconsistent.
I don’t find that instance of showing a right thing to be pedantry, still I prefer the alternate, English form plurals.
Oh, there’s one that really frustrate me and brings out my pedantry in full force.
I don’t know if it’s a peculiarly Swedish thing (where I live and work), but everyone at work uses ‘fora’ (correct neutral 2nd declension plural nominative, but forums is preferred!) when they intend a single forum.
And that inevitably ends up becoming ‘foras’ when they talk about more than one.

I don’t find what you’re saying boring–quite the opposite-- but I also think the kind of Catholic hairsplitting you discuss is precisely why those first two commandments are there: to protect the weak and foolish from falling prey to priests and other charlatans. There are people all over the world right now on their knees praying to statues of the Virgin Mary. The priests will say that isn’t the same as worshipping, but if it were a golden calf that would be a different story, hence the need for a bright line rule against all of this nonsense.

I breastfed my kid until she was 19 months, and while I was always discreet, I was still fully prepared to rain verbal hellfire down on any asshole who might have had any ‘objections’ to seeing a mother nursing her baby.
