This is partially the result of those wacky “Satanic Panic” law enforcement training videos from the 80s and 90s that BB posted some of recently. It seems strange today that anyone would take that stuff seriously, but lots of law enforcement officials did, and many of them are still around. Indeed, some of the “pastors” and “ritual crime experts” STILL give talks to cops.

Given the number of allegedly ‘satanic’ or ‘ritual’ murders(peaking during periods of cultural ‘awareness’/hysteria) that have occurred; compared to the number(zero) of demonic summonings, eldritch blasphemies drawn into our reality where the fabric between the worlds is at its weakest, or even reasonably satisfactory paranormal mephitic vapors; I’m going to say that this ‘occult’ stuff doesn’t work very well.
If I’m going to be consorting with the prince of darkness at the cost of my very soul, I’d damned well better get at least 1 Balrog per nubile virgin sacrifice. I’m prepared to be a bit more flexible on the numbers for less photogenic sacrifices; but even so…

Yeah, I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. In sensationalistic cases where terrorism is a likely indicator, such as the Boston Bombings, I see it. But it isn’t like every time a Muslim person kills some one it automatically has the label. Most of them don’t even make the national news, include the rare but real “honor” killings.
Also, some idiots are cops.
