Excellent, I recently finished the Monster Hunter series and have been looking for a similar ‘regular Joe gets thrust into wry supernatural situations’ book to get back into.
Have you tried Charles Stross’s Laundry series? They’re pretty much “geek ends up in supernatural situation. Also; bureaucracy”.
Or the first volume* of the Quantum Gravity series by Justina Robson: Keeping it real. More or less humanity is thrown into a supernatural situation and all civil services react with bureaucracy.
* I don’t like the rest of the series - the first novel works for me because of the clash between your-typical-early-21th-century life and “wtf? is this an elf?”. the later novels are imo not very interesting bread-an-butter urban fiction stories.
