Thereā€™s no such thing as a free lunch hug.

$800 would be quite a bargain for an ambulance here where they go for $1100+

If you canā€™t trust someone wearing a free hugs sign who can you trust?

The hug was free, but a photo plus boxing lesson is $20. ALWAYS read the signā€™s fine print.

Heinlein actually. But the original idea dates from the early 20th century pre-Prohibition practice of offering a ā€œfreeā€ sandwich to bar patrons who bought alcohol, since consuming booze, unlike food, tends to encourage customers to buy more of it, thereby increasing overall profits.

How can ā€œFree Hugsā€ possibly be ambiguous? Was he campaigning to free a guy named Hugs from jail, and just happened to also be charging for hugs but not advertising that?

Didnā€™t DeBlasio promise to bring those days back??

The legislation thatā€™s often called Romneycare was vetoed twice by Romney but overridden by a supermajority. Everybody is also so focused on the concept of an individual mandate they donā€™t realize Heritageā€™s mandate differed from ACAā€™s. Heritageā€™s mandate proposal didnā€™t set any standards for insurance, even the cheapest, crappiest insurance would be enough to satisfy the mandate. Heritageā€™s proposal also sought to lower employee insurance costs for businesses by shitting all over existing standards. And letā€™s not forget that perennial conservative favorite, the voucherization of Medicaid and Medicare. Heritagecare essentially tried to contain healthcare costs by kicking people to the curb while pretending to be all about compassionate conservatism.

LOL (as ever) @ ā€œcompassionate conservatism.ā€ Weā€™re doing you a favor by kicking you out of the mental hospitals and cutting your food stamps! This way youā€™ll learn to provide for yourselves! Like a fledgling being shoved out of the nest!

The really funny thing is that theyā€™re the ones constantly accusing the Left of grievous paternalism, while happily donning the mantle themselves, albeit one of a differently tinted cloth.

Whatā€™s that phrase for reflexively accusing others of your own sins?

It really does sometimes come across as not yet feeling settled on a whole new continent about half a millennium ago. Yā€™all still donā€™t feel quite safe, quite at home. Like the holiday might end suddenly, without notice.

But that wouldnā€™t explain Canadians and many South/Central Americans.

That one wasnā€™t solely, if at all, the conservatives and almost certainly a good thing. (They were horrible.) Screwing up the aftermath was/is the problem.

No, deinstitutionalization was a bipartisan cause, and not without justification (cf. One Flew Over The Cuckooā€™s Nest.) However, the plan was to re-home the mentally ill into smaller community-oriented halfway houses, and that was the part that Reagan & co. refused to fund. Nobody in favor of deinstitutionalization had been arguing to simply let all the crazy people out onto the streets to fend for themselves with no support, but thatā€™s exactly what Saint Ronald did.

Hereā€™s a news flash: Americans going to Canada donā€™t get free medical care, last time I was there. So why should Canadians who come to the US?

I canā€™t speak for emergency care, but it was money on the barrel head to see a doctor last time I Inquired.

Does Canadaā€™s health insurance not cover their people when they travel? My US insurance does. I have to file a claim of course as you canā€™t expect places in another country to accept your card but Iā€™ll get reimbursed.

Europeā€™s the same way: Tourist? Pay cash or credit card (if they take one), often up front or you donā€™t get diddly.

Canada as a health care paradise is a bit of a myth:
"An estimated 52,000 Canadians ā€” half of those from Ontario ā€” left the country to receive non-emergency health care in 2014, according to a report titled Leaving Canada for Medical Care.

The new report notes an increase of more than 10,000 patients ā€” or 26 per cent ā€” from a year earlier are looking outside Canada for medical treatment."
